One of nature’s many intriguing creations is rutilation, it occurs when Quartz “captures” the mineral titanium dioxide during the “growing” process. This creates golden crystal “needles” inside clear and smokey quartz specimens. Rutilated Quartz stones with supreme optical clarity are worthy of being made into lovely jewelry pieces. Great care however must be taken in the cutting and polishing so that the trapped inclusions (needles of titanium dioxide) remain undamaged.
